My Strategy for Longer iPhone Battery Life

I’ve read a couple of bad reviews about the iPhone’s battery. Many people don’t know that the iPhone battery is not removable. You can’t buy and extra one and pop it into your phone when you run low on juice. So, you pretty much need to get through your day on just one battery charge.

That hasn’t been a problem for me (yet). I don’t consider myself a power user, but I spend several hours each day with the device, and I’ve yet to run out of battery before day’s end. Here is the setup that works for me:

  • I charge my battery overnight. I don’t own a vehicle charger, which I suppose could be used to nurse your battery along during the day, but so far I haven’t needed one.
  • I have bluetooth turned off. I don’t have a need for it at this time, so why enable it? (I’ve got a Garmin Nuvi GPS unit in my car, and it will work with the iPhone when I get around to updating the Nuvi firmware, so maybe I’ll test out the bluetooth then.)
  • I have two IMAP email accounts (Gmail and Yahoo) set up on the phone, but I have my phone set to check for new messages manually. If you use push email or ask the phone to check for mail at frequent intervals, you can expect MUCH shorter battery life. I’m fine without push email. In fact, when you press the “Mail” icon, the iPhone springs into action and checks your mail accounts, and this seems to work well for me.
  • My screen brightness is set at about 80% on the brightness slider (under settings on the iPhone). This has been plenty bright and readable in both indoor and outdoor conditions.
  • I do have Wi-Fi enabled. At home, I hook up to my wireless network, and also do at known hot spots I frequent. Having the Wi-Fi turned on all the time hasn’t killed my battery yet (although it is somewhat annoying when the iphone asks if you want to join the various wireless networks it sniffs out while you’re driving down the street).

In fact, I’ve never even come close to exhausting the battery. This setup works great for me. If you exercise a little common sense, the iPhone battery should get you through your day without a hassle.
